All of us have either experienced or witnessed the magic of CrossFit. The Open comes around and someone gets their first pull-up or muscle up; you're pushing hard in class and get a PR on a lift! The feeling is infectious and extremely motivating. Sometimes chasing that feeling leaves us feeling let down and disappointed. Oftentimes as CrossFit athletes we expect big things but are not necessarily willing to climb the progression ladder.
All of the sports that we blend together to create CrossFit, are very challenging on their own. Add them together and we have a lot to learn, and a lot of progress to be made. Building strength takes time, whether that's in gymnastics or weightlifting. Developing technique takes time, needing to be done at lighter weights with focused practice. Developing aerobic capacity takes time, with consistent effort and good recovery.
We have all heard the sayings about CrossFit being about the journey, not the destination. A big piece of the journey is about shifting our focus from macro goals to micro goals. Building day after day, week after week. Not skipping out on days we don't like or skills were not good at. It is about having the humility to be bad at something and the consistency to get better.
Practice having realistic expectations. Practice enjoying the journey.
